About Us
HISTORY

GKB Landscaping, LLC. was started in 1999 in the Sayreville/South Amboy area by Mark Squillace, a local resident. GKB Landscaping's original name was Give a Kid a Break Landscaping. Mark did not want a basic name for his business, he wanted something that would grab people's attention, and Give a Kid a Break Landscaping did just that. The idea of the name came from his mother, and Mark stuck with that name until the business was bigger and more successful. It was changed in 2002 to the abbreviated name of GKB Landscaping.

Why do we need to mulch the flower beds for the winter months? Isn't that a waste of money?

"Mulching your trees, shrubs and perennials for the winter is very important. However, doing it properly is even more important. Two to four inches of mulch around your plants is plenty. Too much mulch is just as bad as too little mulch. Aside from aesthetics, the purpose of mulch is to regulate and control temperature and hold moisture. Too little and plants can dry out. Too much and plants can rot."

When do you stop cutting the grass?

"Keep mowing the grass in November, even if it is growing slowly. If the grass gets too long and then becomes covered with snow, the grass becomes matted, tangled, and damp, inviting the disease "pink snow mold" to grow. Pink snow mold attacks your lawn when it is subjected to long stretches of cool, wet weather, and often develops underneath snow. It looks like rough circular patches of dead and matted grass blades, between 3 and 12 inches in diameter. When this disease attacks, you may see tiny white or pink masses on dead blades of grass. Sometimes the blades of grass become light tan and stick together. It can invade the crowns and roots of the grass, causing serious, permanent damage to the lawn. Believe it or not, this lawn disease can be spread on lawn equipment, shoes, animals, water, and by wind."

How much do I need to water my new sod? When and how long should I?

Goal: New sod must remain wet for the first 14 days. After the first 14 days, the roots should begin to dig into the ground and watering can be reduced. The amount of water needed, depends upon the weather.

After sod is laid- watering is based on the high temperature for the day. Each sprinkler is different, so times may vary. Some sprinklers need 30 minutes and some need over 1 hour to make sod and ground below wet. We recommend you “sneak a peek”. Pick up a corner of the sod after watering and check the ground below, if it is dry, water more. If it is muddy or water is standing, reduce the sprinkler time.

Below 55 degrees: As needed to keep sod wet
55-65 degrees: Every other day in early morning (5:00-6:00am)
65-75 degrees: Once a day in early morning (5:00-6:00am)
75-85 degrees: Two times a day (5:00-6:00am and 1:00-2:00pm)
85+   degrees: Three times a day (5:00-6:00am, 12:00-1:00pm, and 5:30-            6:30pm)

The biggest myth we hear is “do not water the sod mid day when it is hot, it will kill the sod”. This is ABSOLUTELY WRONG! Not watering on hot days will result in failure.

I have mushrooms growing on my new sod. What does that mean?

This is good news, you are just watering a little too much. Slightly reduce the amount of watering and mushrooms will die off. Mushrooms will also disappear when the temperature cools off.

When do you start cutting the grass?

We start cutting the grass in April. The time in April depends all upon the lawn. Some lawns need to be cut in the beginning of the month of April and some in the end of April.

Do you cut lawns bi-weekly?

No, we do not offer that service. We cut on a weekly basis. If in some case the lawn does not need to be cut due to heat and/or limited water, we may skip that week and continue the following week.
